Left Turns at a Traffic Signal (Failing to Yield the Right of Way)

July 11, 2018

Whether it’s because people don’t receive proper training before getting a driver’s license or because they are in a hurry, drivers turning left at a traffic signal often forget what the law states. Even if you have a green light, you have to yield the right of way to all oncoming traffic. In other words, if you are making a left turn you have to wait until traffic clears before making the turn even if the light is green. Careless drivers tend to ignore the right of way entirely and try to beat oncoming traffic by making a dangerous left turn as soon as the light turns green. The left turn should be made after all the incoming traffic has passed. That way, the driver can see for sure that the left turn is okay to make. Driving can be very simple and less dangerous if everyone take a minute to think, evaluate the turn, and just make it safely. Sadly, these accidents happen every day and can lead to significant injuries and even death. We know you are in a hurry sometimes, we are too but, your life is more important. Just take a few extra seconds when making that left turn. Traffic will clear eventually and allow you to make the safest possible turn with FULL visibility. Drive safe!
