The Gift of the Moment

December 22, 2017

Growing up, the holiday season was my favorite time of the year. All year I looked forward to waking up Christmas morning, seeing all my gifts under the tree, and then frantically opening each and every one of them before my Dad even had the chance to turn on his video camera. Looking back now, it was the anticipation of this moment, not the moment itself that brought me excitement. I literally played with the toys inside those tightly-wrapped boxes for about a day after opening them before I got bored with them. And after I got bored, the cycle continued and I would again begin to look forward to next year — looking forward to the next day of gifts.

I share this story because, especially in the times we live in now, it so easy to continually look to what’s coming next — never just focusing on the here and now. As a child, I was always so focused on the future that I never just took the time to appreciate the moment… to be thankful that I had the opportunity to experience it. Even in the worst of times, and I know that for many people times are extremely tough, I believe that everyone can still take a step back and find joy in the moment we are currently experiencing: Never let the trials and tribulations of life steal from you the gift that it is to be alive in this moment. It was Winston Churchill that said “one must never forget when misfortunes come that it is quite possible they are saving one from something much worse; or that when you make some great mistake, it may very easily serve you better than the best-advised decision. Life is a whole, and luck is a whole, and no part of them can be separated from the rest.”

This holiday season, no matter what we believe or hope is on the horizon for us, The Law Firm of Daniel L. Jacobs, Jr., sincerely hopes that we all take the time to enjoy the brief moment of time that is right now: see the gifts that we currently have right in front of us, and feel blessed that we have them. The future isn’t going anywhere; it can wait until our moment passes.
