Driving Safely In Wet Weather

February 28, 2018

Spring is finally coming to Northeast Ohio, and driving on wet roads will come with it. Follow these tips to drive as safely as possible in rainy and wet conditions.

Slow Down

It’s obvious but true. The best way to avoid dangerous incidents is to maintain control of your vehicle at all times. Wet roads increase stopping time, decrease traction, and reduce visibility. Obey the speed limit, and drive cautiously, especially in unfamiliar areas and in the midst of heavy traffic.

Maintain Your Vehicle

Spring presents an opportunity to ensure your vehicle is in safe condition. Whether you take your vehicle to a mechanic or maintain it yourself, take the time to ensure tires, windshield wipers, lights, turn signals, and defroster are all working properly.

Brake Early and Often

Along with maintaining safe speeds, braking wisely is critical in wet weather. Braking hard on wet surfaces creates the risk of skidding. Good tires and anti-lock brakes help avoid skidding, but they are not fail-safe. Gradual braking increases your ability to maintain control of your vehicle. Plus, your brake lights alert other drivers to pay attention and maintain their distance.

Turn Your Lights On

Headlights are a major safety tool. Maximize your vision and visibility by turning them on in wet conditions. Many vehicles turn on the headlights automatically. Whether automatic or manual, ensuring your headlights are on is always a good strategy when conditions are less than perfect.

Enjoy the spring weather, and focus on staying safe on the roads, especially in wet weather.
